In a bid to enhance its contribution to sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region, Taiwan is set to capitalize on its expertise in science, technology, manufacturing, and innovation. This was articulated by President William Lai at the Asia-Pacific Forum & Exposition for Sustainability held in Taipei. The forum, which assembles businesses and organizations from across Asia, addresses crucial sectors such as clean energy, circular design, green finance, and low-carbon living.
President Lai underscored resilience, innovation, and shared prosperity as key components of Taiwan’s sustainable development strategy. The government is actively working to bolster urban resilience, fortify energy security, and expand its renewable energy capabilities. Efforts are also being made to enhance the power grid and energy storage systems to support these initiatives. Part of this approach includes a comprehensive carbon reduction strategy, backed by technological and financial support, with the country already initiating carbon fee payments to aid in emissions reduction.
To facilitate businesses in their journey towards digitalization and achieving net-zero operations, Taiwan plans to establish a substantial NT$100 billion fund over the next eight years. This fund aims to provide necessary support to enterprises in transitioning to more sustainable practices. Additionally, a diversified development program is in place to offer further assistance to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, fostering an environment conducive to sustainable growth.
Leveraging its prowess in semiconductors, information technology, and precision manufacturing, Taiwan intends to drive sustainable growth while simultaneously contributing to global sustainability efforts. By focusing on these strengths, the nation aims to not only bolster its own sustainable development but also set an example for other countries in the region to follow. This initiative highlights Taiwan’s commitment to fostering a future where economic growth and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.
