Saint Lucia is seeking to deepen its partnership with Taiwan, focusing on key areas like education, agriculture, renewable energy, and climate change initiatives. This intention was underscored by Prime Minister Philip Pierre during his recent five-day state visit to Taiwan, where he met with Taiwanese President William Lai in Taipei.
Prime Minister Pierre highlighted the common challenges faced by both Saint Lucia and Taiwan, particularly the impacts of climate change. Saint Lucia is currently grappling with a drought exacerbated by El Niño, which underscores the need for improved water management systems and rainwater harvesting.
Education remains a primary focus, as Pierre expressed gratitude for Taiwan’s ongoing scholarship support that has benefitted over 400 Saint Lucian students. He advocated for expanding these opportunities and emphasized the need for a modern cultural and creative arts center. Additionally, Pierre encouraged more academic and professional exchanges, which would allow Saint Lucian doctors, researchers, and students to study in Taiwan.
The bilateral discussions also covered the modernization of agriculture, renewable energy development, and enhancing school infrastructure, especially as rising temperatures make classrooms uncomfortable for students, emphasizing the need for better learning environments.
President William Lai responded positively to Pierre’s commitment to strengthening ties and noted the growing cooperation between the two nations, including in the private sector. Lai announced that the Taiwan External Trade Development Council would host the 19th Taiwan-Saint Lucia trade exhibition in Saint Lucia next month, with participation from over 70 local and Taiwanese companies, aiming to foster commercial partnerships.
The meetings also saw President Lai thanking Saint Lucia for supporting Taiwan’s international engagements, including its bid for full membership in the United Nations. Both leaders reaffirmed the importance of ongoing cooperation to address global issues such as climate change and public health.
The discussions reflect a mutual intent to expand the Saint Lucia-Taiwan partnership through education, trade, sustainable development, and enhanced people-to-people exchanges.
