This burgeoning field captured global attention during the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, where robots showcased remarkable abilities in various sporting events. Notably, some of these humanoid creations surpassed human records, such as Usain Bolt’s legendary 9.58-second 100-meter sprint and Wayde van Niekerk’s impressive 43.03-second 400-meter time.
The swift strides made by Chinese robotics firms have not only intensified the competition among them but have also sparked a broader conversation about the industry’s future trajectory. A central question emerging is whether humanoid robotics is nearing its transformative “iPhone moment,” a term coined by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in 2023. This concept describes a pivotal technological breakthrough that propels an innovation from a niche concept to a widely adopted technology, reshaping industries and user experiences.
Wang Xingxing, the founder and CEO of Unitree Robotics, a prominent player in China’s humanoid robot manufacturing sector, provided insights into this potential turning point. Speaking at the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing on August 20, Wang expressed cautious optimism regarding the timeline for achieving such a breakthrough in embodied intelligence. He suggested that while it could occur within two to three years, a more conservative estimate might extend to a five to ten-year timeframe, depending on developmental speeds.
Unitree Robotics, under Wang’s leadership, has been at the forefront of these developments. The company recently marked a significant milestone by debuting on the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR Market. The market responded positively to this move, with Unitree’s shares closing at an impressive 460 percent higher on its first day of trading.
