In a significant development, Tesla and eight other automakers are initiating a recall of approximately 4.3 million vehicles in China due to concerns about the accessibility of concealed or emergency door-release handles during accidents and electrical failures. Tesla’s vehicles constitute the largest portion of the recall, encompassing around 2.98 million units of imported and locally manufactured Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X cars. The recall process is set to commence on September 25.
The vehicles involved in the recall are slated to receive various remedies, which may include the addition of warning labels, enhanced markings, or over-the-air software updates. Regulatory authorities have expressed worries that, after a severe collision, the mechanical emergency door-release handles might be challenging to identify, potentially hindering occupants’ ability to escape or rescuers’ access to the vehicle.
Beyond Tesla, other significant recall numbers include about 390,000 vehicles from Xiaomi, 371,000 from Leapmotor, and 264,000 from Xpeng. These recalls highlight the broader industry impact, as multiple manufacturers address the identified safety issues.
This large-scale recall comes as China intensifies its vehicle safety regulations, with a specific focus on passenger safety during emergencies. As part of these enhanced safety measures, the country plans to prohibit concealed door handles starting in 2027, reflecting a proactive approach to mitigate risks associated with such vehicle features.
