Belize PM Criticizes China’s Sanctions, Reaffirms Support for Taiwan

Date:

Belizean Prime Minister John Briceño has strongly criticized China’s sanctions against Belize’s Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Fonseca, labeling them as unjustified and illegal. This development has further solidified Belize’s resolve to continue supporting Taiwan despite pressures from Beijing.

Speaking at the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Bangkok, Briceño emphasized Belize’s sovereignty in making its own foreign policy decisions. He reassured that the sanctions would not deter Belize from maintaining diplomatic relations with Taiwan, an island that China views as part of its territory and discourages international engagement with.

The sanctions were imposed after Fonseca and Paraguayan Minister of Information and Communication Technologies Gustavo Villate participated in an event in Taipei celebrating Taiwan’s Double Ten National Day. As a result, China has decided to freeze any assets the officials might hold within its jurisdiction, bar Chinese individuals and organizations from conducting business with them, and deny them entry to mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau.

Belize’s stance places it among the select group of countries that continue to uphold formal ties with Taiwan, countering China’s diplomatic pressure. Briceño’s comments highlight the ongoing international debate over Taiwan’s status and the diplomatic challenges faced by countries like Belize that choose to maintain relations with Taipei.

This diplomatic rift underscores the broader geopolitical tensions as nations navigate their foreign policy decisions between China and Taiwan. Belize’s firm position, as articulated by Prime Minister Briceño, reflects its commitment to independence in international relations and support for Taiwan amid escalating pressures from Beijing.
