Australia, Vanuatu Forge Tech-Focused Security Deal Amid China’s Rising Influence

Date:

Australia and Vanuatu have solidified their relationship through the signing of the Nakamal Agreement, a significant security and development pact. This agreement is intended to enhance cooperation between the two nations, particularly by involving Australia in consultations on major third-party investments in Vanuatu’s critical infrastructure. It also establishes Australia as a primary security and policing ally for Vanuatu.

The agreement’s finalization came after a period of delays, primarily due to Vanuatu’s concerns about potential limitations it might face in attracting investments from other countries. However, officials have emphasized that the pact respects the sovereignty of Vanuatu, ensuring that it does not permit the establishment of foreign military bases or the militarisation of its infrastructure.

Australia’s commitment under the agreement includes a substantial funding promise to be spread over the next ten years. This move aligns with Australia’s strategy to enhance its influence in the Pacific region, where it faces growing competition from China. The agreement is part of broader regional initiatives by Australia to bolster ties with Pacific nations amid the strategic competition and concerns over foreign influence.

Despite the new agreement with Australia, Vanuatu continues to engage economically with China, which has been a significant investor and creditor for the island nation. China has contributed to various infrastructure projects in Vanuatu, including the construction of government buildings and transportation networks. Vanuatu has stated its intention to maintain economic relations with China while ensuring transparency in such dealings.
