Amid increasing military tensions with China, Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Alexander Yui, has highlighted the critical role of U.S. arms sales in bolstering Taiwan’s defense capabilities. Yui underscored that Taiwan is actively boosting its defense budget to better respond to potential security threats, emphasizing that the island must not solely depend on external assistance but should also focus on strengthening its own defense mechanisms.
A significant U.S. arms package, valued at approximately $14 billion, remains under consideration by the U.S. administration. This proposed package has garnered support from lawmakers in Washington, who perceive Taiwan’s defense requirements as ever more pressing due to the escalating military activities by China in the region. The increasing frequency of military exercises, as well as the deployment of warships and aircraft by China near Taiwan, underscores the urgent need for this military support, according to Yui.
Yui articulated that the scale of military aid should be proportional to the perceived threat level. He reiterated Taiwan’s commitment to safeguarding its security and democratic way of life through robust defensive strategies. The island nation is determined to continue investing in its self-defense to maintain stability in the face of external pressures.
Meanwhile, U.S. officials have affirmed that Washington’s policy towards Taiwan remains steadfast, with a continued emphasis on supporting Taiwan’s security as a vital component of the bilateral relationship. Despite the ongoing regional tensions, Taiwan has expressed confidence in the enduring strength of its partnership with the United States.
