SpaceX has delayed the anticipated launch of its Starship rocket due to an engine issue that caused the mission to abort shortly before takeoff. Scheduled for liftoff from the company’s Starbase facility in Texas, the mission was halted when several engines failed to ignite, triggering an automatic abort system. This led to the initiation of fuel offloading procedures from the rocket.
The company announced plans to attempt another launch within the next few days as engineers work to diagnose and resolve the engine issue. Starship plays a critical role in Elon Musk’s vision for expanding the Starlink satellite network, advancing space-based infrastructure, and ultimately enabling human missions to the Moon and Mars.
This mission would have marked the rocket’s first significant test flight since SpaceX’s recent public offering. However, the postponement has impacted investor confidence, with the company’s shares dropping by more than 6 percent in early trading following the delay.
SpaceX has invested over $15 billion into the development of Starship, aiming for a fully reusable spacecraft. In collaboration with NASA, the company is also under contract to utilize the Starship for upcoming lunar missions. Nonetheless, several technical milestones must still be met to ensure the vehicle’s safety for human travel.
