Two Weeks to Decide: Trump Puts Putin and Zelensky on the Clock

Date:

US President Donald Trump has officially put Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the clock, giving them a two-week window to advance peace talks before he decides on a course of action. The potential consequences for Russia are severe, including “massive sanctions” and tariffs.
This bold move from the White House aims to break the diplomatic deadlock that has plagued the Ukraine conflict. Trump, who recently held separate talks with both Putin and Zelensky, has made it clear that the next step is theirs. A meeting between the two leaders is now seen as the key test of their commitment to peace.
As the US deadline looms, Putin has offered an olive branch in the direction of Washington. In a televised speech from Sarov, he praised Donald Trump, describing his presidency as a “light at the end of the tunnel” for the otherwise dismal state of US-Russia relations. This marks a significant shift in tone from Moscow.
However, Putin’s speech also contained a strong nationalistic message. He stated that Russia’s existence is intrinsically linked to its sovereignty, implying that external pressure would not force it to compromise its core interests. This complex blend of hope and defiance will define the critical fortnight ahead.
