Taiwan is urging Japan and the Philippines to ensure that their current discussions on maritime boundaries and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) do not compromise Taiwan’s rights and interests in the surrounding waters. This appeal comes on the heels of an announcement by Japan and the Philippines, stating their intention to negotiate the delimitation of maritime boundaries and continental shelf claims in line with international law. Experts have indicated that the proposed zones may overlap with areas claimed by Taiwan.
Officials from Taiwan have reported receiving assurances from both Japan and the Philippines that any forthcoming agreements will not be legally binding on third parties and will adhere to established international legal principles. Taiwan remains committed to engaging with both nations to protect its maritime interests, which include fishing rights and resource access within the region. The Taiwanese government has also emphasized that existing agreements with Japan and the Philippines will continue to be upheld.
This development occurs amid increasing regional tensions following China’s assertion of claims over waters to the east of Taiwan, where Chinese coast guard patrols have been conducted. Taiwan has firmly rejected China’s claims, reiterating its stance on sovereignty and maritime jurisdiction.
Meanwhile, officials from the Philippines have clarified that formal negotiations have yet to commence, underscoring that it is premature to speculate on the potential consequences of any future agreements regarding fishing rights or territorial claims. The ongoing dialogue between the involved parties suggests a sensitive approach to managing regional maritime issues.
