After Gaza Deal, Zelensky Urges Trump to Focus on “Russian War”

Date:

Following President Donald Trump’s announcement of a successful Gaza peace deal, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky quickly moved to redirect the US leader’s focus to Eastern Europe. In a Saturday phone call, Zelensky congratulated Trump on his Middle East achievement and immediately urged for similar energy to be applied to ending the “Russian war.”
Zelensky’s message, shared publicly after the call, was a masterclass in strategic diplomacy. He praised Trump’s success, calling the Gaza deal an “outstanding achievement,” thereby validating the US administration’s approach to conflict resolution. He then used this validation as a springboard, stating, “If a war can be stopped in one region, then surely other wars can be stopped as well,” directly challenging Trump to replicate his success in Ukraine.
The call was not merely an abstract appeal. Zelensky provided a grim update on the war, informing Trump about Russia’s deliberate attacks on Kyiv’s energy system. This grounding in the harsh realities of the conflict served to emphasize the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate and robust international support.
A significant portion of their “productive” conversation was dedicated to Ukraine’s defense needs. The two presidents discussed concrete ways to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense systems, with Zelensky hinting at “solid ideas” and potential agreements in the pipeline. This focus on military hardware underscores Ukraine’s position that it must be able to defend itself effectively before any lasting peace can be considered.
Ultimately, Zelensky’s outreach was an appeal to Trump’s identity as a dealmaker. By framing the end of the Ukraine war as the next great challenge, and by insisting that strength is the path to “real diplomacy,” Zelensky aligned his nation’s needs with Trump’s stated political goals, creating a powerful synergy for a potential peace push.
