Typhoon Champi May Bring Heavy Rains to Taiwan This Weekend

Date:

As Typhoon Champi approaches Taiwan, the island braces for potential heavy rainfall and storm warnings. Taiwan’s meteorological authorities may issue a sea warning as soon as Wednesday night, followed by a possible land warning on Thursday night or Friday, as the typhoon draws closer.

The greatest impact is anticipated on Friday and Saturday, with central and northern Taiwan, along with Yilan and Hualien counties in the east, expected to receive significant rainfall. Currently, Champi is moving west-northwest at a speed of approximately 20 kilometers per hour, and it boasts maximum sustained winds of 191 kilometers per hour. Forecasts suggest the storm could maintain its strength as it nears the waters northeast of Taiwan.

However, the exact path of the typhoon remains uncertain. Meteorological models propose several potential routes, including the possibility of making landfall in eastern Taiwan, veering north before reaching the island, or taking a more southerly track through the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines.

The storm’s course will partly depend on changes in the Pacific high-pressure system, which might influence its direction. Ahead of the typhoon’s approach, weather conditions across Taiwan are expected to stay relatively stable, though isolated showers could occur in some coastal and eastern regions.
