Trump to Address Advanced Taiwan Arms Sales, Jimmy Lai Case with Xi

Date:

During his upcoming visit to Beijing, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to discuss two significant issues with Chinese President Xi Jinping: the sale of arms to Taiwan and the case of incarcerated Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai. Speaking at the White House, Trump confirmed that these topics would be part of their dialogue, especially in light of Washington’s enduring support for Taiwan’s defense capabilities. Trump acknowledged President Xi’s opposition to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan but emphasized that it would be a key point in their discussions.

In December, the U.S. announced its largest arms package to Taiwan, valued at over $11 billion, underscoring the strategic defense ties between the two territories. Recently, Trump’s advisors have encouraged Taiwan to increase its own defense spending, while a U.S. official noted that the impending Trump-Xi summit does not signify a shift in U.S. policy concerning Taiwan. Despite the potential for tension, Trump expressed confidence that no conflict regarding Taiwan would arise during his presidency, citing his strong rapport with President Xi as a stabilizing factor.

In addition to defense matters, Trump intends to address the situation of Jimmy Lai with President Xi. Lai, a prominent pro-democracy activist and outspoken critic of the Chinese government, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in February. His conviction on charges of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and publishing seditious materials has drawn international attention and concern about the state of national security laws in Hong Kong. Trump, who has previously broached Lai’s case with Chinese authorities, reiterated his desire to see Lai released, acknowledging Lai’s efforts to champion democracy despite his imprisonment.

Moreover, Trump plans to discuss the arrest of Jin Mingri, founder of Zion Church, who was detained late last year. This crackdown followed new regulations from China’s top religious authority, which prohibited unauthorized online religious activities and collaborations with foreign entities. The arrest has been seen as part of China’s broader efforts to tighten its controls over religious practices within its borders.

These discussions between Trump and Xi come at a pivotal moment in U.S.-China relations, with significant implications for regional security and human rights issues. As Trump prepares for these high-level talks, the outcomes could have lasting impacts on diplomatic and defense strategies between the two global powers.
