As President Donald Trump travels to Malaysia aboard Air Force One, he has revealed plans to sign a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia immediately upon arrival. The president has described the deal as a “great peace deal” that he proudly brokered between the two Southeast Asian nations that have been locked in territorial disputes for decades.
The peace initiative comes in response to violent clashes that erupted in July 2025 between Thai and Cambodian military forces along their disputed border. The five-day confrontation resulted in loss of life and displaced thousands of civilians on both sides, highlighting the severity of the conflict and the critical need for international intervention to prevent further bloodshed.
Malaysia successfully mediated between the two nations and negotiated a ceasefire that was implemented in late July 2025, bringing an immediate end to the fighting. The Malaysian government has maintained its peacekeeping role by coordinating ASEAN observer missions that continue to monitor the truce along the border and ensure both countries honor the terms of the ceasefire agreement.
President Trump will arrive in Malaysia on Sunday to attend the 47th ASEAN summit, where he will also hold discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping. In his Truth Social announcement, Trump stated that the peace deal signing would occur immediately upon landing to accommodate all the dignitaries attending this major diplomatic event. He also expressed sympathy for Thailand following the death of the Queen Mother and confirmed plans to meet with Thailand’s Prime Minister. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and other ASEAN leaders will witness the signing ceremony.
The peace agreement addresses a border dispute spanning more than 800 kilometers and involving multiple non-demarcated areas between Cambodia and Thailand. Recent diplomatic progress includes agreements reached during an October meeting of the Joint Commission in Chanthaburi, Thailand, where both nations committed to advancing boundary demarcation efforts. Thailand’s Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow has stated that both countries are close to finalizing a Declaration of Thailand-Cambodia Relations to permanently resolve border issues. The dispute has historically centered on ancient Hindu temple sites in the Dangrek Mountains, with previous serious violence in 2011 resulting in at least 16 deaths near Preah Vihear temple.
