Taiwan Unveils Advanced Chiang Kung Missile for T-Dome Defense System

Date:

Taiwan is making strides in enhancing its air defense capabilities with the release of technical specifications for the Chiang Kung missile by the National Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST). Known as the Tien Chien IV, this high-altitude interceptor is set to play a crucial role in Taiwan’s ambitious “T-Dome” integrated air defense network. Designed to intercept ballistic missiles at altitudes reaching 70 km, the Chiang Kung employs a land-based vertical launch system and a two-stage solid-propellant rocket. With vectored thrust technology, it promises improved maneuverability at high elevations.

The missile’s advanced radar system is capable of detecting a variety of targets and engaging multiple tactical ballistic missiles while countering electronic warfare threats. This system is further enhanced by a mobile active electronically scanned array radar, which is engineered to perform in conditions complicated by electromagnetic interference and GPS jamming. Such features are expected to fill a critical gap in Taiwan’s current defense infrastructure, augmenting existing systems under the proposed T-Dome network.

Despite its strategic importance, the Chiang Kung missile program is grappling with financial challenges. The missile was notably absent from Taiwan’s special defense budget, leading the Ministry of National Defense to pursue funding through a supplementary budget. Officials have expressed concerns that delays in securing financial support could impede not only the missile’s acquisition timeline but also the broader development of the T-Dome initiative.

The introduction of the Chiang Kung missile represents a significant advancement in Taiwan’s defense strategy, providing a high-altitude interception capability that is currently lacking. As the nation continues to bolster its security measures, the successful integration of the Chiang Kung into the T-Dome network will be pivotal. However, securing the necessary budget remains crucial to avoid setbacks in the program’s implementation and overall progress in strengthening Taiwan’s air defense systems.
