Taiwan Challenges UN Resolution’s Interpretation on Its Sovereignty and Participation

Date:

Taiwan’s foreign ministry has asserted that United Nations Resolution 2758 does not define Taiwan as a part of China, challenging Beijing’s interpretation of the resolution and its implications for Taiwan’s international participation. According to the ministry, the resolution should not be used to bar Taiwan from engaging with the United Nations system or other international organizations.

The ministry emphasized that Taiwan and China do not hold a subordinate relationship, with Taiwan’s democratically elected government serving as the representative for its people in global affairs. This stance counters Beijing’s narrative, which reportedly uses Resolution 2758 to bolster its claims over Taiwan’s status internationally.

Further, Taiwan’s foreign ministry highlighted that historical agreements following World War II did not transfer sovereignty over Taiwan to the People’s Republic of China. It also noted that Beijing has never governed the island, reinforcing Taiwan’s position on its sovereignty and self-governance.

In light of these assertions, Taiwan has appealed to the international community to uphold a rules-based international order. It urged the United Nations to maintain neutrality concerning Taiwan’s involvement in international affairs, advocating for Taiwan’s rightful participation on the global stage.
