The recently opened Shengji Tunnel in Taipei is set to significantly reduce travel times and alleviate traffic congestion in the bustling Nangang District. The tunnel, which connects Zhongxiao East Road with the access road to the National Biotechnology Research Park, marks a substantial infrastructure investment costing NT$1.878 billion.
Spanning approximately 824 meters, including a 716-meter tunnel section, the Shengji Tunnel is engineered to enhance traffic flow on Zhongxiao East Road Section 7 and Academia Road, providing a more direct route between Nangang and Sijhih District in New Taipei City. This new development is expected to cut peak hour travel times between the research park and Nangang Station from 15–20 minutes to under 10 minutes, offering a more efficient commute for daily travelers.
Aside from easing traffic, the tunnel also serves as a critical alternative route during flooding events or other emergencies that may impact Academia Road. Additionally, the tunnel design includes a separate pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, promoting safe and accessible transit options for non-motorized commuters.
The National Biotechnology Research Park, inaugurated in 2018, has become a hub of activity, employing over 2,600 researchers and professionals. Its establishment has spurred growth in biomedical research and biotechnology within Nangang, making the tunnel’s opening a vital development for commuting efficiency in this flourishing area.
