Musk Breaks With Trump Over Deficit-Boosting Tax Bill

Date:

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has publicly criticized Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” warning it will reverse the cost-saving measures he championed as head of the Department of Government Efficiency. Musk told CBS News he was “disappointed” to see the bill, which he says “increases the budget deficit” and erases progress made by his DOGE team.
The legislation, narrowly approved by the House, extends Trump-era tax cuts, boosts military spending, and funds mass deportations, while slashing benefits for low-income Americans. Despite being a major Trump donor, Musk’s opposition signals a widening rift between the two high-profile figures.
Musk’s comments have energized critics of the bill, including some Republicans who argue it fails to deliver meaningful deficit reduction. As the bill heads to the Senate, debate continues over its long-term fiscal impact.
