Political Dominoes: Nepal PM Falls Amid Unrest, Protesters Demand More

Date:

Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has become the first political domino to fall in a crisis ignited by a social media ban, but protesters on the streets are aiming to topple the entire government. The resignation, which followed the deaths of 19 people in clashes with security forces, is seen by many as a desperate gambit to save a discredited political system, not a genuine step towards reform.
The government’s attempt to regulate online expression was a grave misjudgment of the public mood. It provided a single, unifying cause for a populace already alienated by rampant corruption, nepotism, and a lack of economic opportunity. For the young generation leading the charge, the ban was an intolerable act of censorship from a government they already held in contempt for its failures and excesses.
The protests were uniquely fueled by the very platforms the government sought to ban. Social media had been instrumental in spreading awareness about the lavish lifestyles of the political elite, creating a groundswell of resentment that exploded into street action. When the government responded with deadly force, it erased any possibility of a simple rollback, transforming the protest into a fight for justice and accountability.
Now, with the Prime Minister out and the ban rescinded, the movement has only grown bolder. Protesters are not celebrating; they are regrouping and expanding their demands. The call to dissolve the government entirely shows a complete loss of faith in the current political class, pushing Nepal into a deeply uncertain future where the power of the street continues to challenge the power of the state.
