Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) on Friday reported increased Chinese military activity around the island, detecting 22 sorties of PLA aircraft and 10 PLAN vessels operating in nearby waters up until 6 a.m. local time. According to the MND, 15 of the detected sorties crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan’s northern and southwestern air defence identification zone (ADIZ).
The ministry stated that Taiwan’s armed forces monitored the movements and took responsive measures to safeguard national security. Such incursions have become a frequent occurrence, reflecting heightened tensions between Beijing and Taipei.
China continues to claim Taiwan under its “One China” principle, despite the island maintaining its own government, political system, and economy. The dispute dates back to 1949, when the Republic of China government retreated to Taiwan after losing the civil war to the Chinese Communist Party.
Beijing has consistently sought reunification, applying military, diplomatic, and economic pressure to weaken Taiwan’s international standing. Nevertheless, Taiwan maintains its de facto independence and regularly reports Chinese military activities to strengthen public awareness and transparency.
