Taiwan and Philippines Quietly Expand Security Cooperation Amid China Tensions

Date:

The Philippines is strengthening its security ties with Taiwan even while maintaining its official recognition of the “one China” policy. Recent developments suggest growing coordination between Manila and Taipei as both nations face pressure from Beijing’s assertiveness in the region.
This year, the Philippines and Taiwan have conducted joint coast guard patrols in the Bashi Channel, while Philippine academics and military officials have engaged in forums with Taiwanese generals to discuss defense needs. Taiwan has also sent observers to a trilateral military exercise involving the US, Philippines, and Japan in the Batanes Islands, located less than 200 kilometers from Taiwan.
Tensions heightened when a senior Philippine military leader was recorded instructing troops to prepare for a Taiwan invasion scenario, sparking anger from Beijing. Relations between China and the Philippines have already been strained, particularly over the Scarborough Shoal, where Chinese coast guard vessels have clashed with Philippine ships.
Analysts argue that for Manila, engaging with Taiwan is a pragmatic step. They view Taiwan as a critical buffer against China’s ambitions in the South China Sea, and suggest that Philippine cooperation with both Taipei and Washington is central to safeguarding its territorial and security interests.
