Your Daily Commute Could Be Damaging Your Skin, Here’s Why

That long daily commute is a perfect time to catch up on podcasts or music, but your choice of listening device could be taking a toll on your skin. A top dermatologist is warning commuters that wearing earbuds for extended periods in transit is a leading cause of localized breakouts and skin irritation.
The enclosed environment of a bus, train, or car, combined with the occlusive nature of earbuds, creates a problematic scenario. A skin expert explains that heat, environmental pollutants, and sweat get trapped against the skin under the earbud. This mixture can easily clog pores, leading to inflammation and a specific type of acne called acne mechanica, which is caused by friction.
The type of reaction your skin has can vary. The dermatologist notes that while some people will experience classic pimples, others might suffer from contact dermatitis—an allergic rash caused by the materials in the earbuds. This usually appears as a red, itchy area. In less common cases, bacteria on the device can cause a painful infection in a hair follicle.
Protecting your skin on the go is easier than you think. The dermatologist suggests investing in a small pack of alcohol wipes to clean your earbuds before and after your commute. If your journey is long, try to take a short break from wearing them. Considering over-ear headphones can also be a better option as they distribute pressure more broadly and don’t seal the ear canal.
If you notice irritation developing, it’s important to act. Gently cleanse the area daily and avoid picking at any bumps. A light, non-comedogenic moisturizer can help maintain the skin’s barrier. For persistent issues, a dermatologist can offer stronger treatments and help you identify if an allergy is the underlying cause.
