Robert Redford, ‘All the President’s Men’ Star and Political Activist, Dies at 89

Date:

Robert Redford, the celebrated actor who brought the Watergate scandal to the big screen in All the President’s Men and remained a potent liberal voice throughout his life, has died at 89. His career was marked by a fusion of artistic excellence and a deep-seated political consciousness that shaped many of his most iconic projects.
Redford was more than just a handsome leading man; he was a thoughtful and engaged citizen who saw cinema as a powerful tool for social commentary. In 1976, he co-starred with Dustin Hoffman in All the President’s Men, a film he also produced. The gripping thriller about the journalists who broke the Watergate story became a landmark of political filmmaking and reflected Redford’s own interest in holding power accountable.
This political streak ran through many of his films, including The Candidate, a cynical look at campaign politics, and Lions for Lambs, which explored the war on terror. Off-screen, he was an outspoken liberal, never shying away from criticizing political leaders. During Donald Trump’s presidency, he expressed his dismay, stating that politics was in a “very dark place” and that Trump should “quit for our benefit.”
Beyond politics, Redford was a passionate and lifelong environmentalist. He was a trustee of the Natural Resources Defense Council for decades and used his platform to advocate for conservation and climate action. His love for the American landscape, particularly the wilderness of Utah where he made his home, was a driving force behind his activism.
While his political and environmental work was central to his identity, he remained a Hollywood powerhouse. He founded the Sundance Film Festival, a beacon of independent art, and won a Best Director Oscar for Ordinary People. Robert Redford’s life was a masterclass in using celebrity to not only create enduring art but also to fight for a better world.
