OpenAI’s Massive Power Grab: Secures 6 Gigawatts of AMD Computing for Future AI

Date:

OpenAI is making a colossal power grab to fuel its future ambitions, signing a multibillion-dollar deal with AMD to secure six gigawatts of computing capacity. This enormous investment in hardware infrastructure is aimed at overcoming the primary bottleneck in AI development and accelerating the race toward human-level artificial intelligence.
The deal will see AMD supply hundreds of thousands of its specialized AI chips (GPUs) to OpenAI over several years. This new hardware will form the backbone of OpenAI’s next-generation data centers, including a one-gigawatt facility set to begin construction next year utilizing AMD’s upcoming MI450 chip series. The sheer scale of the energy consumption—equivalent to that of five million U.S. homes—speaks to the intensity of modern AI workloads.
This move represents a significant strategic win for AMD, which has been vying for a larger share of the lucrative AI chip market. The vote of confidence from an industry leader like OpenAI sent AMD’s stock soaring by over 30%, adding a staggering $80 billion to its market value. The deal validates AMD’s technology and positions it as a critical supplier for the AI revolution.
Beyond the hardware purchase, the agreement forges a deeper financial tie between the two companies. OpenAI received a warrant that gives it the option to buy a 10% stake in AMD, comprising 160 million shares, at a nominal price. This provision ensures that OpenAI has a vested interest in the success and innovation of its key technology partner.
While OpenAI is valued at approximately $500 billion, the funding mechanism for such a massive expenditure has not been detailed. The company’s aggressive spending, which saw it burn through $2.5 billion in cash in the first half of 2025, underscores its commitment to investing heavily in the talent and tools required to lead the AI industry.
